A good thing about joining a club, group or team is that it brings people together with common interests. You can join a ruby team even if you had never played before. You need to become an active member of the club because this is not only a great way to meet people but also one to increase your chance of developing true friendship when living abroad.

What if there no such a group?

The social media can be the best answer. Create one, and it takes a minute to do so online for whatever you are interested in from cultural events to just meeting for coffee. There are many people who would be willing to join you because there isn't a group in their locality that interests them.

Connect with expats

You can do this in two ways. The first one is by joining expats in your region where you can meet over coffee and share your interests. The second one would be by connecting with them through blogs. You never know, some of the expats in this blogs might want to meet you; personally.

Make the first move

Introduce a once a week lunch after the Thai class with your fellow classmates because this way, you get a chance to know them better. Extend this by inviting people you met through other events and soon they may organize trips to explore the area.

Take a class

Thai language classes are a great way of meeting other expats, while exercise classes are good for meeting locals. Do both and extend this to many others even if it means cooking classes.

Set a goal for yourself like inviting one new person a week or signing up an activity with other expats once a week. Also, don't call home too often. Why spend two hours a day calling home while there are other things that you can do to keep you busy?

Stay in a good neighbourhood

It is a must for you to buy or rent a house or a condo unit in a decent neighbourhood. Areas that seem to be insecure can only add up to your loneliness!
